Inspired by the woodland found in her local Sussex Downs landscape, this porcelain vessel blurs the boundaries between the made and the found. Elaine’s work is steeped in the context of her surroundings and this piece features small twigs, which are meticulously handmade from porcelain.
Material: Porcelain, semi-opaque glaze
Dimensions: Height: 10cm, Width: 9cm, Length: 9cm
Care Instructions: Dust gently or wipe with damp cloth, not suitable for dishwasher or microwave
This hand-thrown vessel is made from porcelain that is mixed with oxides to give it a flinty black tone. Small twigs, also made from the black porcelain, are created by hand and then attached to the vessel once it is leather-hard. The piece is left unglazed, which gives it a smooth appearance and a subtle sheen.
Ceramic artist Elaine Bolt’s work is guided by a sense of narrative and steeped in the context of the local surroundings. An alumni of the Crafts Council’s Hothouse scheme, Elaine works with local clay and mixed-media to create pieces which aim to blur the boundaries between the made and the found. Elaine teaches and lectures in ceramics at various institutions, including her Brighton-based studio, and her work is often informed by the colours and tones found in the landscape of the South Downs.
