Drawing inspiration from follies, grottoes and Victorian shell boxes, this casket has been pieced together from shells, antique coral, a recycled mother of pearl necklace and an agate cabochon recycled from a favourite broken broach.
Material: Wooden box, shells, mother of pearl, cabochon, antique coral
Dimensions: Height: 25cm, Length: 20cm, Width: 13cm
Care Instructions: Dust gently with a soft brush
The piece is created from a wooden box onto which shells, mother of pearl, cabochon and antique coral are carefully arranged and fixed using adhesive. The background areas of the casket are filled with minute shells, gathered on a beach in France, while the inside is lined with Venetian hand-marbled paper.
Tess Morley creates three dimensional, shell encrusted forms, ranging from obelisks and mirrors to cups and chandeliers. The daughter of two painters, Tess studied fine art at Brighton before she returned to her passion of working with shells. Tess’s restoration of grottoes has also brought the attention of The National Trust and English Heritage, and she has worked on the Goodwood Shell House, the Shell House at Hatfield Forest and The Long Water Grotto at Valentines Park.
