The Alter Cabinet with Sculpture

The Alter Cabinet with Sculpture by London based furniture makers Sasa Works is a functional piece inspired by a large, ancient cabinet in a rock cut church in Lallibela, Ethiopia. The cabinet name 'Alter' comes from the sacred context of its origin, but also in the idea of how it could potentially be used to hold sacred objects. Crafted from European Oak, with sliding dovetail joints and a hand-carved removable sculpture made from English Yew and a single pebble. If preferred, this piece can be made to order without the sculptural detail.

PROCESS

Focusing on the notion that the practice of architecture encompasses everything from buildings to artwork for the home, SASA Works strives to combine sustainable materials and a refined design aesthetic in their work. The cabinet is made using traditional joinery methods – the hinges, handles, shelf brackets are hand-crafted in the London workshop, made from steel that is cut, formed, filed, brazed welded, then coloured with a patina and waxed.
