Little Tales of Great Beauty: Tale One
As the festive season beckons, The New Craftsmen will be bringing you Little Tales of Great Beauty; a deep exploration of the stories and inspirations behind our Makers and their new collections, to reveal and celebrate the innate beauty of their work.
Over the next eight weeks, The New Craftsmen has invited makers to bring each tale to life through literary quotes, poetry and prose. Each collection will be paired with an evocative quote selected by the makers; bringing both object and words together to tell a tale of great beauty.
Tale One: Colour
This week, boldly coloured porcelain takes centre stage in Arjan Van Dal’s striking new collection of decorative and functional vessels for The New Craftsmen.
Moved by the classical form of Chinese porcelain displayed at The British Museum, Arjan was inspired to render the art of ancient dynasties in a range of modern silhouettes and a contemporary palette. His colours reference exclusive glazes developed by different epochs of Imperial China.
At night I dream of colour.
Some dreams I dream in colour.
My colour dreams I remember
Chroma, Derek Jarman (1993)
