Cork Souffle

Joe Hartley
Joe Hartley's Cork Souffle is a functional, tactile piece of homeware, hand-thrown from matt ivory coloured stoneware, with a natural cork stopper and a glazed interior.

The Cork Souffle is an example of Joe's cross-disciplinary interest in process and materials, often combining two or more material types within a single piece. For the Cork Souffle Joe has contrasted matt ivory stoneware with natural cork, defining the simple form of the vessel around the character of the cork piece, making each one unique.
Material: Ivory stoneware & natural cork.
Care Instructions: To be cleaned with a hot damp cloth only.

The form of the piece is led by the character and size of the cork itself. Once a piece of cork is selected, Joe carefully throws a simple vessel form in clay to fit it exactly, making a perfect marriage between two contrasting and distinctive materials.
The Maker Joe Hartley Ceramicist - North West England

Working from his Manchester studio, Joe Hartley makes ceramic objects and homewares that communicate ideas about the way we interact with objects and space. Inspired by quotidian tasks, his objects have a precise function and considered design. Central to Joe’s practice is his potter’s wheel, which he uses to create clean, minimal ceramic pieces, often including secondary materials, such as cork, wood and textiles. In 2014, Joe was shortlisted for the prestigious Perrier-Jouet Art Salon Prize.
