These pins were originally made by piece workers (low level workers who repair items and were paid per piece), to top up their income, hence the term "pin money". Newfoundland is a collection about collections a realisation that makes one rethink the title breaking it up into syllables separating the words: new found land. Anglo-Saxon finger rings Mediaeval turret brooches thimbles shoe buckles, belt buckles, knife handles, nails pins and spoons have been made precious, be-jewelled with diamonds and seed pearls, embellished with gold silver and coral and given new stories, made wearable.

Romilly Saumarez Smith is a jewellery designer creating pieces using antique finds and lost artefacts, transforming them into new treasures. Medieval buttons, vermillion hued corals, remnants buried and forgotten all become part of the world again as rings, necklaces, jewellery boxes and bespoke objects. Romilly trained at Camberwell School of Art in the 1970s; originally working as a bookbinder before switching to jewellery in 1998. In 2017 she was shortlisted for the Women’s Hour Craft Prize.
