A large, traditional Royal Sussex trug, designed as a fireside trug for kindling and small logs. The handle and rim are crafted from locally coppiced sweet chestnut, while the body boards are made from cricket bat willow. The trug is as beautiful as it is functional.
Material: Sweet chestnut wood; willow wood
Dimensions: Height: 30cm
Care Instructions: Wipe with damp cloth
Trug making involves multiple steps- the chestnut used for the trug bodies are firstly cleaved with a special axe before being manually shaved into the correct thickness. The chestnut strips are then steamed and bent before being hammered into shape.
The Cuckmere Trug Company is a Sussex based family-run business led by Robin Tuppen, which aims to preserve the legacy of the Royal Sussex Trug. Invented by Thomas Smith in the 1820s, the Sussex Trug is now a globally recognised symbol of the English gardening scene. Entirely multi-functional, the Sussex Trug can be used used when collecting flowers in the garden, shopping at the local farmers market or simply as a piece at home to display fresh produce or logs.
