HADITHI Floor Lamp

HADITHI Floor Lamp by SASA Works was commissioned by The New Craftsmen in response to the Economic Botany Collections at Kew Gardens, where makers were invited to examine and creatively respond to a myriad of objects and their narratives. SASA Works looked to spring time flowers and the enchanted realms of woodlands, which often symbolise purity, grace and healing. Created with an organic regularity, this piece was inspired by forms in nature, with an allusion to the idea of being ‘grown’ and not simply made. Made from formed fabric dipped in ethically sourced beeswax, the light echoes many pendant flowers. Metal has been used to echo the delicate veins of the flower. When illuminated, the light produces a delicate warm glow with a warming beeswax and features a dabbled shadow effect, with the metal veins beneath, creating a beguiling atmosphere. The fabric cable brings a soft flow to the upstand like a delicate tendril. This sculptural and experiential piece welcomes a sense of enchantment into the home.

PROCESS

The piece is entirely made by hand through several stages of making that bring together a range of techniques. A wooden dome block was turned on a lathe to be used as a mould to shape the fabric over. The fabric is then boiled in a stiffener and placed over the mould whilst hot, with pins holding it in place. Once dried the shade is brushed with warm beeswax.

The steel for the stand and shade frame is hand cut, drilled, heated and forged to create the various forms. The pieces are braze welded together, then the joints are hand cleaned with various files and patinated before waxing. The shade is stitched to the steel frame, before the light is wired. Due to the handmade production of this lamp there may be slight variations in the finish of the shade resulting in a unique 'sculpted' character for each piece.
