Handwoven Hemp & Black Alpaca Throw with Rust Orange Finnsheep Wool

Handwoven Black & Alpaca Throw with Rust Orange Finnsheep Wool by London-based weaver Catarina Riccabona, is crafted on a traditional loom from plant-dyed Finnsheep wool, undyed hemp and alpaca. The throw can be used at the end of a bed or beautifully draped on a sofa.

This piece is one of three from the Hemp & Black Alpaca series. Catarina’s starting point was the desire to use completely undyed materials such as the natural fine hemp in the warp and the natural fleece-colour black of the alpaca yarn. The rusty orange section is made from a mushroom-dyed Finnsheep wool. Catarina’s designs often form spontaneously while she is weaving and each of her throws are highly individual, characterised by slight irregularities that are typical of handmade pieces.

To make the throw, Catarina employed a traditional floor loom using a block threading setup. This gives Catarina the option to juxtapose areas of different weave structures side by side. Catarina is known for using only sustainable materials in her work – whether that be undyed warps or recycled yarns.
