Hi!Breed: Squishy Thonet Chair by London-based designer and artist Charlotte Kingsnorth is a boudoir chair, which has been upholstered by hand using a lush green silk velvet. This chair is intended for light use.

Hi!Breed: Squishy Thonet Chair by Charlotte Kingsnorth is a continuation of her Hi!breed collection, the bringing together of vintage furniture frames and fleshy biomorphic upholstery. With every new chair comes a new character, which is drawn out and realised as an individual sculptural form. This chair is made from a mended bentwood Thonet chair and hand stitched in plush silk green velvet.

Process

The piece is made using green silk velvet, chosen to reflect the character of the frame. Charlotte hand-stitched the fabric around the body of the chair, the bulbous upholstery held in with matching green velvet buttons.

Charlotte Kingsnorth is a pioneering designer who trained under Toord Boontje at the Royal College of Art in 2012, before setting up her own London-based practice. Charlotte’s work melds functionality with a personal exploration of materiality, form, and the subversive. Having first presented her work at Design Miami in 2017, The New Craftsmen recently collaborated with Charlotte during the creation of her lichen patina furniture collection to develop new applications for this unique technique. Charlotte has also created work for Bill Gates, Fendi, SHOWStudio, Christies, and the V&A.
