Claylarks

To mark the 10 year anniversary of The New Craftsmen, we have invited our community of makers to reflect upon and take inspiration from the evolution and uses of their craft over time. Following ‘Plant Explorations’, we unveil our second exhibition of the year - ‘Claylarks’ - as part of London Design Festival 2022.

Claylarks

The exhibition celebrates how clay traditions have been developed and absorbed by craft communities and how ceramics have been integrated into our daily lives, environments and rituals over millennia. We welcome you to visit ‘Claylarks’ and discover the resulting collection of crafted furniture, lighting and objects in our Mayfair showroom.

The inspiration behind ‘Claylarks’ stems from a mudlarking trip earlier this year on the banks of the Thames to which Creative Director Catherine Lock invited fifteen craftspeople. Guided by intertidal archaeologist Mike Webber, the makers uncovered sherds of pottery and small objects offering tiny portals to the traditions and innovations of global potting communities. Brought together by our ancient river and washed up on the foreshore of the City of London, these fragments of pottery similarly revealed how we have lived with craft in our daily lives: their functions, interactions and stories.

Since their muddy adventures, each maker has been in continuous collaboration with Catherine Lock and The New Craftsmen team to develop a piece or collection in response to their findings on the banks of the Thames and additional research at the Museum of London. The maker’s works reflect a timeline spanning thousands of years of clay traditions. Culminating in the London Design Festival exhibition in our Mayfair showroom.

The New Craftsmen will exhibit ‘Claylarks’ at its showroom on North Row in Mayfair from 20th - 24th September. The collection of work will be available to view and purchase online from the 18th September.
