Le Equilibriste is a unique, framed artwork by London-based ceramicist and illustrator Aude Van Ryn. This decorative, terracotta collage belongs to a collection of one-off works exclusively for The New Craftsmen. The artworks showcase Aude’s fascination with art from the mid-20th century. From abstract still lifes to the relationship between geometric shapes, Aude plays with volume, pattern and texture within simple compositions. The artwork is mounted and framed in oak, without glass.

Process

Each artwork is hand built using terracotta clay, mostly cut into sheets, then decorated with underglazes and on occasion, partially glazed. The textures on the tiles are made using various mark-making tools, made from whatever she finds around her, from firm pieces of cardboard to a small metal pin.
The Maker Aude Van Ryn Illustrator - South East England

Celebrated Belgian illustrator and ceramicist Aude Van Ryn creates handmade ceramic tableware, figurines and sculptures. She has developed a vibrant, abstract aesthetic, incorporating dots, lines and geometric shapes, alongside brightly coloured plants, flowers and birds. Aude Van Ryn moved to London aged 21 to study illustration at Central Saint Martins. She went on to study at the Royal College of Art and has been creating distinctive illustrations for publications such as The Guardian & The New Yorker.
