Attua Aparicio
Maker's Story
xOne half of design collaboration ‘Silo Studio’, Attua is an alumnus of the Royal College of Art’s Design Products course. Attua’s work places an emphasis on industrial processes and materials; her collection for The New Craftsmen created as part of a material research project initiated during her residency at the European Ceramic Work Centre in the summer of 2018. Her research focuses on how to use waste from the glass industry to pursue innovation in ceramics, navigated through a responsive approach to testing.
Maker's Quote
"I like to find new ways of working with already existing materials, by challenging material conventions. I'm interested in sustainability, material hybridization, and texture."
Multi-disciplinary Designer
The Process
Attua’s work is created from press-moulded porcelain, stoneware, terracotta, and borosilicate glass, which has been fired at 1280ºC. Attua specifically uses borosilicate glass in her work to prevent waste, as its composition prevents it from being recycled. Her practice is rooted in material and process research, with a particular focus on sustainability. Experimentation is at the heart of Attua's work and she is motivated by learning through making in order to discover new possibilities.
