THE PROCESS

The company was established in 1866 in the Scottish town of Paisley, an area that prides itself on technical prowess, skilled craft making and meticulous attention to detail. Today, nearly a century and a half later, these principles hold fast. Begg x Co use a wide variety of weaving and finishing apparatus to create their collections. Their unique approach champions the use of cutting-edge computerised equipment alongside traditional mill machinery – some of the devices used today were created by Begg employees around 70 years ago.

Q&A

1. What motivates you to make?

We really love what we do which is what keeps us motivated. The team at our Ayrshire mill are trained in-house to perform every procedure with fervour and pride. They’re passionate about the importance of quality, and are highly skilled technicians who strive to maintain exceptional standards.

2. What and/or who are you most inspired or influenced by?

We are based in the small Scottish coastal town of Ayr where we make and design every collection in our own mill. With cinematic skies at our window and an abundance of beaches, mountains and lochs at our door, Scotland’s rugged coastline is endlessly inspiring. Stark yet staggeringly beautiful, Ayr’s paradox of industry and nature is at the heart of everything we do. Drawing inspiration from Scotland’s rich and diverse cultural heritage, we never cease to be inspired. Line and brushstroke, craft and the human hand are also at the heart of each collection.

3. What is your unique approach to your craft, and how have you honed your skills?

With a focus on sustainability, craftsmanship and quality, our highly skilled team of weavers and knitters use the finest natural noble fibres, sustainable cashmere, wool and silk. Our industry experience dates back to the 1860s and we champion the use of cutting-edge computerised equipment alongside traditional mill machinery. The modern-day craftspeople at Begg x Co use a wide variety of weaving and finishing apparatus to create each collection.

Cloth is still pummelled for a softer handfeel using the same wooden device created by Begg employees around 70 years ago, and the characteristic ripple effect seen on some items occurs after gentle brushing with specially cultivated Italian teasel plant heads, which are dampened with mineral-rich, soft Scottish water. Our finished products are pressed using the age-old method of brown paper infused with strands of copper, which gives scarves and stoles that signature glossy sheen.

4. What is your defining or proudest moment as a maker so far?

We’re proud to say that ethical production and sustainability is ingrained in everything that we do. As members of the Sustainable Fibre Alliance, nurturing close relationships with key suppliers is something that we take very seriously. The manufacture of products using natural fibres means animal welfare is a major concern, so the monitoring of good practice is paramount to us. Our sustainability team makes regular visits to the farms in Mongolia and China to allow us to feel confident about high standards of animal husbandry, and certifies that any cashmere, angora or wool materials have been sourced ethically, without coming into contact with any harmful chemicals. We actively collaborate with a number of partners to ensure due diligence on all matters relating to the textile industry’s impact on the natural environment and work hard to minimise the inevitable risks.

5. What is your dream project?

To continue working with great people doing interesting projects that excite us.
