THE PROCESS

All artwork is created in Caitlin’s London studio – either hand-painted onto drafting film or using paper cut-outs to create screen artworks. Hand dying, textile screen-printing and embellishment processes are central to her practice.

Caitlin mainly works with silk for the way it takes dye and the vibrant colours that can be achieved. Other base fabrics include wool, linen and cotton. Each fabric is hand dyed before being screen-printed using dyes. Much care is taken over the final finishes from hand-rolled edges to contrasting cushion backs and well-chosen zip colours and trimmings.

Q&A

1. What motivates you to make?

I can’t help it, it’s part of who I am and I would be miserable not making. I love using my hands, I love the feeling of mastery with a process or material, I love playing with colour and I love all the stories you can tell through making. The narrative possibilities of textiles are fascinating to me.

2. What and/or who are you most inspired or influenced by?

The natural world, folk art and traditions, tools and labour, traditional textiles, hand-rendered pattern-making, visual story-telling, the craftmanship of the unknown maker, ceremony and symbolism. I love how textiles can function as communication and how they can hold personal or social histories. How motifs, patterns and the placement of these can suggest narratives.

In my collection for The New Craftsmen, you can see my love of flora and fauna, the interplay of figurative motifs with geometric patterning, my love of colour and folk-art charm.

3. What is your unique approach to your craft, and how have you honed your skills?

Hand dyeing, textile screen-printing and embellishment processes are central to my practice. I never stopped hand-dyeing or screen-printing since I graduated, challenging myself intuitively with some of the processes I use.

With screen-printing each fabric is hand dyed before being screen-printed using dyes. Most often, I use a complex process called colour discharge printing, a technique which allows you to work on coloured grounds. After printing, the fabrics are steamed to make the colours react and fix them. This process feels a little bit like magic and can be hard to control. I enjoy the unpredictability of it and how the process sometimes makes decisions for me – we work together. I mainly work with silk for the way it takes dye and the vibrant colours that can be achieved.

I’m also interested in the interplay of materials – currently contrasting wool felt applique and silks. I like to combine 2D motifs and patterns with more 3D qualities and embellishments. Stitch is becoming a more integral part of my practice.

4. What is your defining or proudest moment as a maker so far?

My solo show Kissing the Shuttle at Cecil Sharp House in London.

5. What is your dream project?

I would love to embark on a project to explore other textile forms such as rugs, blankets or tapestries. Artistically, I would love to work with a museum or archive again, like the Kissing the Shuttle exhibition, to create site-specific large-scale textile works.
