Charles Shearer
Maker's Story
Charles Shearer was born in Kirkwall, Orkney, before moving to Aberdeen to study illustration at Gray's School of Art and later the Royal College of Art in London. He also teaches printmaking in numerous art schools and works on commissions for books and magazines, such as Ambit and the Cadogan Travel series. Charles often depicts landscapes in his work, and is inspired by artists such as Vaughan, Hepworth and Sutherland, as well as the print works of the German Expressionists.
Maker's Quote
“I often take my materials outside and work on site. I find that the landscape directly informs what I do and what I wish to say. I then translate some ideas and subject matter through print, either by stencil or by calligraphic processes.”
The Process
Charles’ prints are inspired by his extensive travels both in the UK and abroad. More recently he has spent significant time in Ireland and Wales, where he has studied the ruins, castles and follies. These influences can be seen in his recent work.
