Katie Spragg
Maker's Story
Katie Spragg is a ceramicist who creates unique hand-made sculptures which explore how nature continues to grow and thrive beyond the urban reality that now dominates many landscapes. Katie’s current work advocates the simple pleasure of being outside in nature, with her pieces often inspired by a specific place, whether it be Forde Abbey in Somerset where she was an artist in residence, or the pavement outside her studio in London.
Maker's Quote
Combining clay with a range of processes including animation, illustration and installation, I create work that aims to arouse curiosity. Whether through sharing a story or conjuring a collective memory, my practice highlights the forgotten sources of joy and amusement that surround us.
Ceramicist
The Process
Katie’s work often begins with a visit to a specific place, followed by a period of research. After she has sketched out her design, focusing on the plants and species local to the area, she models all the clay flowers, leaves and grasses by hand. She then arranges them into compositions, combining them with other materials including wood, glass, concrete and stone.
