Midwinter Floor Lamp with Dandelion Shade

£13,080

The Midwinter Floor Lamp with Dandelion Shade, is part of Laura Carlin’s new lighting range, exclusive to The New Craftsmen. The lamp is created as an extension of the Midwinter range, which Laura began working on during our Holkham Hall residency in 2021. Laura has collaborated with the same forge and with The New Craftsmen team to explore the Midwinter design through lighting. Inspired by the fireplace in Holkham’s North Dining Room, illustrated with Aesop’s Fables, the floor lamp is based on the fable ‘The Ant and the Dove’. The characters are carefully moulded in sculptors clay by Laura before they are cast in bronze. The height of the lamp is exaggerated by the dove on its high branch looking down upon the ant at the base of the stem. This version comes with a 19” illustrated Dandelion shade, Giclée printed on textured white card, designed by Laura specifically for the floor lamp. This lamp comes with a black flex and a black LED floor switch dimmer. International wiring is available, please enquire for further details.

Process

Laura began designing the lamps using a combination of drawings, paper cut outs and maquettes. She found it was important to play with the scale, feel and tactile nature of the lamps, as well as establishing strong narratives. She made several visits to the foundry to pull and push the design until she felt it both had stature but still belonged in nature. She created a model using sculptors clay, which was taken through a process of wax casting to form a ceramic shell, before being cast in bronze. The conversation between the lights and their shades allowed Laura to play with colour, mood and atmosphere. Again, maquettes were made for the shade, using ink, acrylic, pastel and pencil to produce designs. Finally she settled on the Dandelion design, which is light, open and expressive. The original artwork was then scanned at a high resolution using a drum scanner, before being giclée printed onto a textured white card, to be handmade into a shade.
