- Product Details
Made from live, green timber, each bowl has been hand-turned on the lathe, then scorched and brushed to remove any charred pieces. This process has been repeated several times to produce a unique texture and color on the surface of each bowl.
This typography is reminiscent of lithified sand dunes; sandstone petrified, with ancient ridges revealed by time. The scorching process helps to finish the surface, burning the sugars present in the wood, resulting in a naturally protective layer. This ancient Japanese technique is referred to as Shou Sugi Ban (焼杉板), and was originally developed to preserve cedar.
Each piece has been finished with a layer of Osmo oil for extra protection. As each bowl settles and dries it will warp slightly, and small cracks will appear giving each piece its own distinctive character.
