- Product Details
These pins were originally made by piece workers (low level workers who repair items and were paid per piece), to top up their income, hence the term "pin money". Newfoundland is a collection about collections – a realisation that makes one rethink the title, breaking it up into syllables, separating the words: new found land. Anglo-Saxon finger rings, Mediaeval turret brooches, thimbles, shoe buckles, belt buckles, knife handles, nails, pins and spoons – have been made precious, be-jewelled with diamonds and seed pearls, embellished with gold, silver and coral and given new stories, made wearable.
Romilly Saumarez Smith began buying metal detecting finds from various sources about five years ago. These extraordinary remnants, buried and forgotten since Roman and mediaeval times, become part of the world again as jewellery, boxes and bespoke objects.
