  • Product Details

The L'al Yak is based on the shape of North American pack baskets and fishing baskets found in the UK. Using coppiced Oak strips, the colours in the basket are all naturally occuring and are unique. During summer coppicing the oak bark is stripped for the Colyton tannery where it takes 18 months to produce durable, strong leather from Devon cow hides. The leather on the basket is undyed, all colours coming naturally from the process. Both the leather and the oak will change over time producing patinas that continue the life of this object.

    About Lorna Singleton

Lorna Singleton is a ‘swiller’ – specialising in woven wooden products made using locally coppiced oak produced in South Cumbria. Using simple hand tools and techniques used by generations of swillers before her, Lorna creates baskets based on the traditional patterns from the Furness area of South Cumbria. She incorporates contemporary features that show off the unique strength and flexibility of swill.
