Blackened exclusively for The New Craftsmen, designed by Sebastian Cox and made by Benchmark Furniture, each shake – a type of shingle commonly used in Japan as architectural cladding – has been cleft (the ancient art of splitting wood along its grain) and delicately hand-scorched – just enough to blacken it without setting it alight. The shakes are then assembled on the door frames to create a fantastic charred texture.
