- Product Details
The split willow tray is made from a mixture of one to two-year-old willow rods grown on Hilary’s willow bed in Devon. It has been inspired by traditional rope weaving techniques from southern Spain and re-envisioned into a willow tray design. Using a shave horse, the older willow is split and carved lengthways to obtain a smooth surface to serve on whilst the younger, thinner willow is twisted into rope handles for a robust appearance and feel.
About Hilary Burns
Hilary Burns is a basket maker based in Devon. Having originally trained in textiles, Hilary became interested in using natural and sustainable materials – namely willow – and currently grows a collection of many different varieties on the Dartington estate, Devon. Between November and March Hilary harvests the crops, drying the rods and re-soaking for weaving as required throughout the year.
Her basketwork is based on traditional techniques used in a contemporary way using heavy willow to give her pieces a robust, chunky and natural looking style.
