  • Product Details

This collaboration between lighting design expert Claire Norcross and ceramicist Akiko Hirai sees the tactile and textured nature of Akiko’s ceramics being applied to a pendant light. Claire was inspired by the utilitarian forms of Akiko’s work and from there did research at her local boat yard.

Akiko hand turned two clay components and brought them together to get the full ‘buoy’ shape. The two pieces had to be completed, wetted and allowed to join together to create a single form. The surface design is based on her signature faceted work, deeply textured with a cracked white glaze covering its surface. The light is limited to an edition of 10 and each one is made to order with an average lead time of 6 months.

Claire is working with lighting engineers Tyson Lighting to create unique, feature lighting to draw on the skills of The New Craftsmen’s makers.

    About the Maker

Akiko Hirai draws upon traditional Japanese methods when making her ceramics. Her pieces are deeply textured and her forms are those of work ware – simple and satisfying. She uses rough dark clay, creating a veil between the rough forms underneath and the smooth calm of the glazed exterior. Akiko studied at The University of Westminster and subsequently Central St Martins, she currently works as Head of Ceramics in Kensington and Chelsea College.
