The creation of this piece was a labour-of-love focused on a closed-loop approach, whereby none of the willow plant was wasted. The stalks and central ribs were separated from the leaves. Paper was then made from these leaves, and papier-mâchéd to form the bowl. The central section was crafted by coiling the stalks and bark to the bowl. The finishing details were completed using stitched bark, alongside stripped and skeined willow wood. This layered, textured approach to making has revealed a range of natural patinas and colours distinct to this material.
Employing a range of traditional basketry and craft techniques, Maggie Smith creates contemporary interior pieces, including wall features, sculptural pieces, large vessels, and functional baskets. Her recent work has concentrated significantly on willow, a focus that has inspired a closed-loop approach to making, whereby every piece of the plant is utilised, from the leaves to the roots.
