The creation of this piece was a labour-of-love focused on the full colour-range and patina of the material. Natural variations of mustard, tan, brown, green and grey create a subtle wave of hues across the work. In terms of process, willow bark was cut into strips and coiled to craft the main body, which was then stitched into place. The section of willow with the canker, was stripped, cut and shaped to form the stopper of the piece. This is attached with cord handmade from willow bark. This layered, textured approach to making has revealed the versatility of this material.
Employing a range of traditional basketry and craft techniques, Maggie Smith creates contemporary interior pieces, including wall features, sculptural pieces, large vessels, and functional baskets. Her recent work has concentrated significantly on willow, a focus that has inspired a closed-loop approach to making, whereby every piece of the plant is utilised, from the leaves to the roots.
