Selwood Side Table

Bill Amberg Studio

The Selwood Side Table is designed by Bill Amberg with respect and passion for his local woodland, in a dedication to the ancient Selwood Forest. The Selwood collection is designed to stand the test of time - traversing generations and becoming part of the rich, venerable saga of the woodland. Amberg says: “I‘m interested in the lifespan, repairability and durability of a product. It’s important that we make things that will have a very long life and can be easily repaired if needed.” These exclusive pieces created for The New Craftsmen are a culmination of Bill’s experience, expertise and exacting eye.

Beginning with Amberg’s idea of a very minimal structural shape crafted from Douglas Fir, felled local to him in Somerset, with minimal intervention. It was inspired by the desire to truly maximise the use of the tree; utilising every part without overworking it, as trying to control it wastes an enormous percentage of the actual tree. The result is an elemental yet exquisitely constructed piece of furniture with a nod to Japanese joinery and architecture. With no visible fixings, the side table is beautifully made, cleverly made, simply made, with poetic robustness.
