Atelier
Project Details
PARTNER: Makers of The New Craftsmen
PROJECT: The Atelier at 34 North Row
DATE: February to April 2015
Craft is intrinsically about human expression and material process.
To highlight this, and to reveal the process of design and making to the public, we created an Atelier - a ‘live’ workshop space in our very own showroom. The Atelier was a living, breathing studio, which housed four makers over three months, generating exclusive new product ideas for The New Craftsmen, and freeing the makers to explore their own potential.
Ranging from tableware to lighting, each maker developed a unique product, exploring new applications, methods of production, and collaborations; extending their practice into new areas that subsequently become part of their making repertoire.

The Atelier engendered some of our most iconic pieces, including the London Life Mural by Laura Carlin and the Maker’s Trestle Table by Lola Lely Studio. These pieces remain popular to this day.
The Atelier was a home-away-from-home, from the tools, to the music on the radio. Every feature and sensory aspect was a reflection of the makers and their practice. The result was a deeply revealing exploration of making, which felt genuine and human
