Burlington Gate
Project Details
PARTNER: Native Land / Hudson & Mercer
PROJECT: Series of Ceramic Artworks
DATE: November 2017
Situated in the heart of the fashion and arts district of Mayfair, Burlington Gate is a dramatic and distinctive luxury residential development wrapped around the first new arcade in Mayfair since 1930. This prestige retail space houses art galleries and connects Old Burlington Street with Cork Street.
Interior Design group Hudson & Mercer commissioned TNC Ceramicist Adam Ross to create a family of art pieces for six floors of the new residential apartment development.
Adam presented a number of sketches to the client before focusing on a selected series of shapes and glazes that would stand alone as artworks, whilst also connecting the floors in a single, clear aesthetic. To create a small distinction, more luxurious metallic glaze was chosen for the penthouse works.

The commissioned artworks draw the eye through the contemporary lobby spaces, creating a gallery environment and showing off Adam’s sensitive use of texture and form against a sleek architectural backdrop.
Thinking spatially, across floors, was a wonderful challenge. Creating a clear aesthetic in any series is really important, but in this commission I had to consider how people might discover the works: perhaps over many months, as lift doors open and close. This narrative of time and place has generated so many other ideas, thoughts about other architectural works.
