Lavendar Grove
Project Details
PARTNER: Private Client
PROJECT: Lavender Grove
DATE: May 2016
The Lavender Grove project offered us a unique opportunity to invert the normal design hierarchy. Rather than adding craft to decorate a space, the client wanted to use craft as the primary lens to conceive an architectural typology for dwelling.
The New Craftsmen were commissioned to explore innovative craft integration for a private site in East London. Enlisting the minds of four of our most insightful and imaginative makers, we defined and managed a number of workshops, focused on material enquiry and interrogation. Working alongside thinkers and makers, we were able to realise a truly unique scheme, with craft at its heart.
Each workshop focused on a different theme, inviting everyone to challenge and re-examine their perceptions of craft, material behaviour and application. The role of craft in our day-to-day spaces, was brought to the fore, resulting in an architectural hommage to craft.

The result was a rich collection of ideas, prototypes and samples - transformed into a physical brief and sent to a shortlist of architectural studios, who were invited to pitch for the project. The next phase will see a selection of makers working directly with the selected architects to insert their ideas into the site.
