Sgraffito Oak Pancheon by Fitch and McAndrew. Pancheons are strong simple forms, historically used to carry out an array of domestic tasks - from mixing dough to bathing infants. Here Fitch and McAndrew reference the decorative sgraffito pancheons originating from Aberdeenshire in Scotland, made to commemorate weddings and births.

This piece was thrown on the wheel using Etruria Marl clay, a red earthenware clay from Stoke on Trent. Once dried to leather hard, it is coated on the inside with a layer of white slip. The designs are then hand drawn directly into the slip, cutting through to reveal the darker clay body below.
Douglas Fitch & Hannah McAndrew are slipware potters based in Scotland. Drawing great inspiration on the heritage of British slipware, their pieces showcase traditional techniques applied in a contemporary way. Using a blend of earthenware clay sourced from Douglas’ birthplace, Devon, Fitch & McAndrew often work with warm palettes of chocolate brown and honey, inspired by their local landscape. All their dishes, pots and jugs are one-off pieces, richly detailed as well as functional.
