Tiered Side Table in Blue

£1,200
Tiered Side Table in Blue is a highly original piece of clay furniture, engineered by designer Joe Hartley. Joe makes ceramic objects and homewares that communicate ideas about the way we interact with objects and space. The legs of this vibrant piece are reminiscent of a French dresser, a direct coincidence of clay being fed through an extruder – a mechanical tool used in many ceramic studios for the preparation and shaping of clay. Joe decided to integrate this result into his design, creating a contemporary piece with classical references.

Process

Working with clay, Joe uses an extruder device to create each leg of his piece. A die plate is fitted with a hacksaw to achieve the desired textured finish, as Joe found that the engineered metal die plate rendered a dull and lifeless surface. Wet clay is fed through the extruder and the legs are thus formed. For the table’s top, Joe throws clay on the wheel, and to finish, uses a coarse cheese wire to complete the textured look.
The Maker Joe Hartley Ceramicist - North West England

Working from his Manchester studio, Joe Hartley makes ceramic objects and homewares that communicate ideas about the way we interact with objects and space. Inspired by quotidian tasks, his objects have a precise function and considered design. Central to Joe’s practice is his potter’s wheel, which he uses to create clean, minimal ceramic pieces, often including secondary materials, such as cork, wood and textiles. In 2014, Joe was shortlisted for the prestigious Perrier-Jouet Art Salon Prize.
