Torso II Sculpture
John de Pauley
Torso II Sculpture by Stonemason John de Pauley is carved from Bath stone, an oolitic Jurassic limestone from the south west of England. This piece is part of a trio of sculptures, taking inspiration from the human form. Each piece is directly carved into the stone, trapping the form rather than following a line.
Rather than having a preconceived idea in sketch form or a model to work from, these pieces have been directly carved into the stone. This method means plunging straight in, leaving much to chance but giving a certain vitality and energy to the piece. Being semi abstract the ambiguous relationship to the torso gives the viewer a sense of the hidden form within the stone.
