Torso III Sculpture
John de Pauley
£2,200
Torso III Sculpture by Stonemason John de Pauley is carved from Bath stone, an oolitic Jurassic limestone from the south west of England. This piece is part of a trio of sculptures, taking inspiration from the human form. Each piece is directly carved into the stone, trapping the form rather than following a line.
Rather than having a preconceived idea in sketch form or a model to work from, these pieces have been directly carved into the stone. This method means plunging straight in, leaving much to chance but giving a certain vitality and energy to the piece. Being semi abstract the ambiguous relationship to the torso gives the viewer a sense of the hidden form within the stone.

Having selected the block of stone, a rough pencil line is drawn on its surface providing a guide to its final shape which is then carefully cut away using a hand saw. After this the piece is carved with a wood chisel as the form finally emerges. Using rasps and rifflers over the surface the piece is completed leaving tool marks visible.
