Two Bronze Hares Sculpture by Frances Pelly is a decorative piece, inspired by traditional Netsuke sculptures and Inuit carvings.

These pieces develop upon Frances' range of soapstone hare sculptures; inspired by the hares that visit her fields in the Orkney Islands. The form of these pieces is influenced by traditional Inuit & Netsuke sculptures, as well as prehistoric stone carvings. These pieces are limited edition, with only six available in each form.

Process

These pieces were created at the Powderhall Bronze foundry in Edinburgh, using moulds made of Frances’ original soapstone carvings. An oxide patina is then applied to create the antique green hue; evocative of the sea which laps Orcadian shores.

Frances Pelly has worked as a practicing sculptor since completing her postgraduate art degree in Dundee, having resided in Orkney since she was invited to be an artist in residence at the Highland Park Distillery more than 30 years ago. Frances draws a lot of inspiration from her surroundings, exploring the local land, seascape and flora in her unique forms. Frances has also travelled internationally with her work, having also completed notable residencies at Fort William Library, The Eden Project and on Baffin Island.
