Part of a series of work exploring the potential of willow, this dynamic sculptural form pays tribute to the art of contemporary basketry. To create this piece, willow rod, wood, wood shaves & bark have been intricately combined using techniques such as cording, knitting, twining, cobbling, and paper making. Mary begins by stripping bark which she uses to create the top of the sculpture, and the main panels within the body of the piece. Around the solidity of this structures, several other techniques have been employed to create the other panels, including the knitting of bark that has been soaked and becomes malleable; delicate shaves of willow stitched together using finely cut willow bark; willow bark fibre that has been made into paper and moulded; and finally corded wood fibre. All the panels were then stitched together and assembled to create the finished piece.
