Willow Ware Basket

Maggie Smith
Willow Ware Basket forms part of a series of innovative work which utilises the willow Maggie Smith grows and harvests herself. With each piece created, Maggie learns something new about what the material can do – and how it can be used. 'Willow Ware' is inspired by contemporising popular and successful designs by rendering them in willow. The resulting container employs several different craft techniques to knit, stitch and weave willow shaves with willow bark. This is a one-off piece, created exclusively for The New Craftsmen.

This piece was made by hand using several different craft techniques. Maggie formed the handles and mid-rib from a willow rod using a combination of shaving and knife techniques. Traditional frame basketry is used to create the main structural formation with willow rods. Finally the basket was woven with willow bark.
