Winnowing Basket was made by Orcadian straw enthusiast Billy Fotheringhame, a maker who has lived all his life on Orkney, and for whom straw is a way of life and a pastime for the long winter evenings. He makes useful baskets for the every day, using traditional techniques to manipulate locally-grown Barley Oats into beautiful forms.
Dimensions: Height: 14cm, Width: 102cm
Care Instructions: Clean with dry dusting cloth only
Before work can begin, Billy strips and cleans the straw. The basket is then crafted using a coiling technique, which involves using natural sisal string to sew a core made of bundles of straw to the line below. The final row alone took half a day to complete.
Orkney-based basket weaver Billy Fotheringhame has practiced the art for more than 30 years. Having lived in Orkney all his life, Billy originally worked as an agricultural tractor driver and first learnt the craft during an evening class, finding it helps to pass the long winter nights.
