The New Craftsmen and Inigo present: Freya Bramble-Carter & Studio Krokalia

In our fourth studio visit with Inigo, we meet creative partners Freya Bramble-Carter and Pallas Kalamotusis, to observe their collaborative teamwork and talk about creativity, friendship, and finding joy.

Freya Bramble-Carter is a ceramics artist and teacher, based in London. Her work celebrates the importance of the natural world, and she has a particular fondness for vessels, finding their form representative of powerful feminine energy; “the power, the beauty, the female form, the obsession, the focus, the drive, and sexuality, are all in there.”

Pallas began her career as a curator and writer, with a BA and MA in Art History from The Courtauld. In 2014 she founded Studio Krokalia, an interior design studio with a portfolio that ranges from historical restorations to contemporary architectural projects.

The pair became firm friends after Pallas attended one of Freya’s pottery classes. It wasn’t long before they embarked on a special project together as a creative union, turning their melting pot of ideas into a colourful collection of one-off ceramic vessels for The New Craftsmen.

Freya and Pallas are constantly inspired by their dynamic friendship; the energy and creativity they draw from one another is palpable and ideas fly like sparks at every meeting.

Pallas is less interested in refining particular processes or rigidly honing skills, preferring instead to evolve fluidly and go with her gut. This approach speaks to Freya’s early training. Her father (the ceramicist Chris Bramble) taught Freya, in a very easy-going way, how to be disciplined in her work whilst simultaneously following her joy. The resulting pieces – thrown by Freya and hand-painted by Pallas – combine the vibrant aesthetic sensibilities, cultural heritage and personality of each maker, to joyous effect.

The notion of revealing ‘magic’ and finding ‘joy’ are key motivators for both makers and these themes translate seamlessly into their work. Shaped in triumphant, open-necked forms, the vessels in their collection for The New Craftsmen are colourfully hand-painted and radiate fun.
