The Great Breck Heather Light is a sumptuous, over-sized version of the original Breck Light by Studio AMOS. This beautiful new version is 150cm in diameter and is inspired by Annemarie's time spent in residency on the Orkney Islands, organised by The New Craftsmen.
This immersive research project ignited her love affair with Heather, a wild and highly characterful material which grows there in abundance, and which takes great skill to tame. "Breck" is derived from the old Orcadian word to describe shallow clay ground which stunted heather grows from. Heather has traditionally been used in Orkney to make rope and baskets, and is known as a reliable material for thatching roofs.

Heather is a versatile material and this work is a discovery of what it can do and wants to do. It has traditionally been used in Orkney to make rope and baskets, and is known as a reliable material for thatching roofs. After walking the land and seeking out long stems of characterful heather, it is bundled together to be gently seasoned before being woven on to the frame.
