The Clover Light in Black by designer and furniture maker, Alexander White, builds on the qualities of his sculptural Michael Cane Light. Furthering his exploration of layering rattan cane under light, Alexander set himself the challenge of condensing his ideas to create a more compact piece. Each part of the light is formed by rolling the cane webbing onto itself, then repeated to create the clover-like shape. Alexander’s clever exploration of three dimensionality makes this piece come to life with great elegance and simplicity. The light comes ready to be installed into mains power and includes a white-light based LED with driver.
Material: Cane, laminated maple, patinated brass, eggshell paint
cm: Width 30.5cm, Depth 15.5cm, Height 35cm
inches: Width 12in, Depth 6.1in, Height 13.7in
Care Instructions: Dust with an air blower or duster, wipe with a damp cloth.
Alexander found that the most challenging part of making the light was to design a method, and therefore a jig, capable of effectively and repeatedly laminating twenty-three layers of maple veneer - all at once - into a very tight horse shoe shape. Once trimmed and after multiple grooves have been routed round them, these horseshoe shapes became the base upon which the cane is applied. Patinated, precision laser cut brass components make a nice addition to the otherwise hand manipulated wood and cane - the combination makes for a homely but polished, soulful product.
