Jessica Light
Maker's Story
Jessica Light is one of England's last remaining passementerie weavers, creating directional, ornate trimmings, braids and edging, typically seen in bespoke furniture and clothing. Working from her London studio, Jessica Light is passionate about maintaining and passing on her historic techniques, some dating back to the 15th and 16th century. Jessica has worked on numerous commissions including projects for Buckingham Palace, the Sultan of Brunei, Cartier and Vivienne Westwood.
Maker's Quote
As the last working passementerie weaver in London, when I retire it's highly likely my industry in this city will die. Maybe the only way forward is a re-emergence of the concept of patronage, to keep it alive. Without it, this East End tradition, which can be traced back to the Huguenots, will become extinct.
Passementerie Artist
The Process
Jessica Light is a specialist in dyeing, cord-spinning and weaving, skills key to passmenterie. Jessica's bold use of colour and materials from horsehair, light-reflective yarns, and leather – have bought renewed interest to a niche, historic practice.
