John Julian
Maker's Story
John Julian creates porcelain kitchenware, serveware and tableware by hand in Wiltshire. Julian Sainsbury established his studio in 1999, first exhibiting at Egg in Kensington, London, where chef Nigel Slater bought one of his iconic pestle and mortars. Jamie Oliver and Nigella Lawson soon followed. In 2013, frustrated with the restrictions of other manufacturers, Julian set up his own workshop, enabling him to inject more character into each piece through the hand-crafted process.
Maker's Quote
I give a lot of thought to proportion and form. I try very hard to be original for the present day whilst sourcing inspiration from the past. The porcelain we use is a beautiful soft white. We use it for its strength, durability, and its aesthetic.
Ceramicist
The Process
John Julian’s distinctive design style is classical but utilitarian. Julian’s team produce ceramics in two ways: some are made by hand on a jolley machine, a device that forms clay into a spinning mould; while others are hand thrown on a potter’s wheel.
