Dark Green Dodko Vase I

Arjan Van Dal
Dark Green Dodko Vase I belongs to an elegant collection of functional and eye catching vessels, created exclusively for The New Craftsmen by ceramicist, Arjan Van Dal. Boldly coloured porcelain takes centre stage in Arjan’s striking new collection for The New Craftsmen. Moved by the classical form of Chinese porcelain displayed at The British Museum, Arjan was inspired to render the art of ancient dynasties in a range of modern silhouettes and a contemporary palette. His colours reference exclusive glazes developed by different epochs of Imperial China, thus using classical design to inform his craft.

White porcelain, selected by Arjan for its pliability and receptiveness to pigmentation, is stained by hand before being thrown on the wheel until precise curves have been achieved. The piece is sanded down and then a transparent porcelain glaze applied to the inside, which not only makes the vase watertight, but creates a lovely contrast to the matt exterior. Arjan spends time refining the surfaces of his work at each stage of the process. The smoother the finish, the more intensely vibrant the resulting colour, and so each vessel retains sharpness in form and hue.
