Tool Tile in Mustard

Matthew Raw
Tool Tile in Mustard is part of The Rustication range, an exclusive new collection by ceramic artist and Jerwood Award Winner, Matthew Raw, for The New Craftsmen. Created in collaboration with handmade tile craftsmen at Froyle Tiles in Surrey, each tile is hand pressed and glazed with Matthew's unique glaze recipes. Available to buy in multiples or singularly to form unique layouts and feature walls using the other patterns and colours in the range.

The Rustication range is Matthew Raw's first commercial tile range and is exclusive to The New Craftsmen. Matthew's attraction to the tile is layered and deep - from their simple form to their vast historical and cultural significance - it has formed the basis of his work and research, including winning the Jerwood Makers Award in 2014 and being appointed the Ceramics Residency at the V&A Museum in 2015. For this tile range, Matthew draws inspiration from the historical masonry technique of 'rustication' where texture and pattern form the surface of a stone block. The result is a collection of four different tile options available in three rich colours including blue, mustard and green - a palette that invites you to layer and combine the tiles in order to create unique combinations for an interior space.

Each tile is hand pressed and finished by Matthew at Froyles Tiles in Surrey to ensure the integrity and mark of the hand, whilst also being able to produce a range of quantities. Matthew has worked with three different colours of glaze to pool in the textures and give a wide range of tonal effects. The glaze also means that on any surface, a wide range of colours can be achieved - a nod back to the Victorian facades that originally inspired this work.
